performers: Ruth Anselm, Kathryn Padberg, Lauren Valentine
music & video animation: “Amen” by David Morneau, 2006.
projection: Esther Palmer
Special thanks to
Amy Campbell, Sarah Lehman and Ali Simon for their contributions in the early stages of the creation of this work. Additional thanks to David Mourneau for his artistic ingenuity, support and graciousness.
Composer’s Notes:
The music is built from a 16-beat drum break played by Gregory Coleman in The Winstons’ “Amen My Brother”. This break has been heavily sampled by the hip-hop community and its varied and various suburbs. The sound and excitement of this particular passage are so widely used and recognized that it is referred to simply as the amen break, similar to the rhythm changes in the jazz community. |
